Diamond Staton-Williams- HD73 (Incumbent)
Diamond isn’t your “politics as usual” candidate. She didn’t intend to go into politics and only decided to run for office when she saw her point of view not being represented. Diamond doesn’t play political games, but is focusing on what real people need.
Our Candidate: Diamond Staton-Williams
- History making: Diamond made history as the first Black female elected to Harrisburg Town Council when she ran for elected office for the first time in 2017 to give her underrepresented community a voice.
- Healthcare Champion: A nurse by profession, Diamond earned her Master of Health Administration and is currently Director of Atrium’s Ambulatory Care Management Department as well as serving as House Representative.
- Pro-Choice Champion: Diamond courageously told her personal story on the House floor about the very difficult choice to have an elected abortion. She has strongly advocated for healthcare access for women in her role as a nurse and House Representative.
- Fights for Working Families: Diamond and her husband of 20 years have three children and understand the challenges that working families face. She has advocated for working families as a Representative in the State House. Diamond knows that a rising tide lifts all boats. That’s why she co-sponsored a variety of legislation that would directly improve the economy for everyone, most notably the Working Families Act which reinstated the Child Tax Credit, raised the minimum wage, increased the maximum income eligibility for the “homestead exemption”, created a homebuyers’ assistance program, and enacted paid family leave.
- Committed to Education: Diamond understands that children are the key to the future. That’s why she co-sponsored 13 education bills to improve public education for children just like ours, including House Bill 336, which would provide a nurse in every school building, like many of us grew up with. Diamond has co-sponsored several pieces of legislation that would rebuild our teacher pipeline (House Bills 291 and 849) and focus on educator retention.
- Diamond agrees with the NC Chamber that pre-k is a fiscally responsible way to invest in North Carolina’s future. In fact, every dollar invested in pre-k will yield $8.90, making expanding public pre-k a common sense investment, which is why Diamond co-sponsored House Bill 846.
- Diamond has fought to fully fund public schools.
- Equality for All: Diamond supports equality, especially when it comes to discrimination, which is why she co-sponsored bills like House Bill 302 and House Bill 518, which would ensure that nobody is able to be discriminated against because of something they are not able to control such as disability, age, or gender.Breaking down barriers for underrepresented communities.
- Workers Rights Leader: Diamond is fighting for paid sick leave in House Bill 841 to ensure all workers have the time necessary to take care of themselves and their families when ill.
- Voters Rights are American Rights: Diamond has fought for everyone’s right to fair elections. She voted for House Bill 9, which would fight partisan gerrymandering, and House Bill 293 which fights voter intimidation to ensure that everyone is able to freely and fairly have their say in our democracy.
Our Opponent: Jonathan Almond
- Radically Anti-Abortion: Almond believes under no circumstances should abortion be permitted, including rape, incest, and the life of the mother.
- Mark Robinson clone: Almond aligns with ultra-conservative Mark Robinson and supports the same outlandish anti-democratic efforts as Robinson.
- Against a Basic and Fair Minimum Wage: Believes that as a small business owner, “you have to pay people based on the value added to the company.”
- A Misogynist Lifestyle: Believes men are to be “head of household” and that the Bible supports this, incorporating this into both his home and his political views.
- Anti-Immigrant: Almond parrots Mark Robinson and Donald Trump on immigration, supporting mass deportation, and blames immigrants for the fentanyl crisis.
- Wants to take America and Voting Rights back to the 1950’s: Almond supports reducing voting rights for Americans: He does not support mail-in ballots or ballot drop boxes, and believes voting needs to be done only on Election Day and with a paper ballot, despite most folks having work on Election Day.
- Pro-Unrestricted Gun Access: Likes to pose with an assault rifle while arguing against common-sense gun laws.
