Our Candidate: Howard Hunter III
- Ahoskie Native: Howard was born and raised in Ahoskie, attended Chowan University and has served District 5 for his entire life. His father, Howard Hunter Jr., served the same district in the General Assembly. Howard Hunter III served in the legislature from 2015 to 2023.
- Experienced in Raleigh: In his time in the General Assembly, Howard served on several influential committees, including the Agriculture Committee (Vice Chair), Appropriations on Information Technology Committee, Appropriations Committee, Ethics Committee, Families, Children, and Aging Policy Committee (Chair), House Finance Committee, Health Committee, Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House Committee, and House Transportation Committee. His diverse committee assignments allowed him to address a wide range of issues impacting North Carolinians, from agriculture and transportation to healthcare and fiscal policy.
- Education Supporter: Howard supports efforts to increase the quality of education in North Carolina public schools with higher teacher pay and better conditions for both students and teachers. In the rural communities of District 5, the voucher program has been a disaster.
- Healthcare Advocate: Howard has supported efforts to expand access to healthcare, including backing Medicaid expansion to provide coverage for more low-income families and individuals, improving overall public health.
Our Opponent: Bill Ward
- Bill Ward has voted with Republicans on every issue in the General Assembly, voting repeatedly to limit freedoms and restrict rights of North Carolinians.
- Ward supported a six-week abortion ban and voted to defund Planned Parenthood.
- Ward co-sponsored HB808, one of a number of bills in his harshly anti-trans agenda.
- Opposes all gun control measures, believing in an unlimited right to firearms.
- Lost elections for Sheriff and County Commissioner before moving to the General Assembly.
